Gecina meets with citizens and school children on climate issues
The International Weather and Climate Forum (IWCF) is a major event for education and outreach on climate issues. This year, from May 25 to 28, 2019, for this IWFC edition held on the square in front of Paris City Hall, Gecina partnered with this event. Let’s look back on the Forum’s four days…
Created in 2004, the International Weather and Climate Forum is a think-tank for exchanges between a wide range of stakeholders from diverse backgrounds: general public, scientists, businesses, weather presenters, municipalities…It aims to empower everyone to take action. This year’s symposium for professionals focused on a topic that concerns each and every one of us: “Changing lifestyle and behaviors…a collective challenge”.
As a stakeholder in urban life, our responsibility is to take action while ensuring that we are aligned as closely as possible with the expectations of territories and users. Humanity, urbanites, our customers and our employees are at the heart of our CSR policy for a greener, more fluid and more inclusive city. Climate action is therefore a core part of our approach and drives us to continually renew our operating and production models. Specifically, Gecina’s climate commitments are reflected in three of our CSR pillars - low carbon, biodiversity and circular economy - as well as our Foundation’s actions. To build awareness of our commitments as widely as possible, we headed out to meet the various stakeholders on our stand and took part in the symposium’s lively discussions.
Throughout these four days, we invited several of our Foundation’s partners to present their actions and initiatives to young and old alike. For instance, Les Clayes Handisport, a charity that combines recycling with assistance for disabled people, came to present one of its vast missions: collecting plastic bottle tops to fund disabled sports wheelchairs. With the French Apiology Observatory, whose mission is to raise awareness of the importance of safeguarding bees, visitors were invited to taste some excellent French honey and went away with a selection of bee-friendly seeds. The charity Chaussettes Orphelines organized an “unravelling session” to show how odd socks can be given a second life, while the French National Forestry Office explained to visitors how climate change is being monitored in forests in order to study and measure changes in forest ecosystems.
In terms of professionals, Paris City Hall opened up its famous “Salons” for lively roundtable sessions. Our Executive Director R&D, Innovation and CSR, Sabine Desnault notably took part in a discussion on the following topic: “Which levers for a lifestyle transformation?”. This discussion was an opportunity to look back on the levers put in place within Gecina to try to transform employees’ behavior in relation to sustainable development issues.
More than 8,600 people visited the International Weather and Climate Forum’s various stands and kiosks over these four days. And we were proud to be part of this 2019 event, convinced of the need to take action, together, for our planet.
